Salinas Pueblo Missions
|
|
Flourishing American Indian trade communities of Tiwa and Tompiro speaking Puebloans once inhabited this remote area in central New Mexico. In the early 1600s Spanish Franciscans found the area ready for their missionary efforts. By the late 1670s the whole Salinas District was emptied of both Indians & Spaniards. What remains today are the ruins of four mission churches, at Quarai, Abó, and Gran Quivira. Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument was established in 1980 through the combination of two New Mexico State Monuments and the former Gran Quivira National Monument. The monument has a total of 1,100 acres. Information on the ruins, as well as the surrounding area, are provided by National Park Service rangers at all three ruins and park headquarters. Park Map |
