Agua Fria National Monument is located
approximately 40 miles north of Phoenix. It includes two mesas
(Perry Mesa and Black Mesa) and the canyon of the Agua Fria River.
Elevations range from 2,150 feet above sea level along the Agua Fria Canyon to
about 4,600 feet in the northern hills. The
monument is 71,000 acres of semi-desert area, which
includes some rich
riparian
habitat along the Agua Fria River. The monument contains at least 450
prehistoric sites; some of the most significant prehistoric sites in the
American desert southwest.
